HS Daily - 10.20.17 MCC Edition: Chiawana Claims Top 4A Seed; Kamiakin Unbeaten Champs
With a 9-1 record since Summer Yates returned from international duty with the USA YNT, the Chiawana Riverhawks no doubt deserve the top spot among the 4A schools in the Mid-Columbia Conference, but it came down to the final day of the regular season as Richland was in the running for the top seed as well.
Chiawana won a tough contest Tuesday against Hanford and took care of business Thursday on the road at Kennewick, awaiting the result from Hanford where Richland needed a victory to remain in front of the Riverhawks. In a wild back-and-forth affair Hanford rallied twice with a late equalizer and an equally late game-winner in overtime, dashing Richland's hopes.
Kamiakin, meanwhile, posted shutout wins on the road to finish what was a nearly perfect season, going 14-0 with one win via a shootout. The defense was astounding with just four goals allowed in 14 games.
Round-up of the action for October 17-19
10/17 Kamiakin 2-0 Walla Walla
Aaliyah Valladares set up both goals, connecting with Mikayla Hunter and River Holle for the victory. Grace Wilbur registered another shutout performance.
10/17 Pasco 0-4 Richland
Gabrielle Fillimore led the Bombers to the victory with two goals and an assist in the contest while Ashley Tonthat had a goal and assist. No other details available.
10/17 Hanford 0-2 Chiawana
Summer Yates scored twice against one of the top defensive units in the league to grab another win. Amber Gamma and Alyssa Garcia provided the assists and Abby Whiston recorded the shutout.
10/17 Southridge 2-1 Kennewick
In a battle near the bottom, the Suns assured themselves of the second 3A seed with the victory. Trinity Demand scored an equalizer for the Lions, but no other details are available from the match.
10/19 Walla Walla 1-2 SO Pasco
The Devils got on the board just shy of the half hour mark via Madison Darnold, but the hosts evened things up early in the second half and took the match the distance. The Bulldogs picked up their second win of the season, both by shootout, with a 5-4 decision in the tiebreaker.
10/19 Richland 3-4 OT Hanford
The two sides were even at one each at the end of the first and Richland grabbed the initial lead after the break. The Falcons answered with a goal from Marinn Nelson at the hour mark, but the Bombers again claimed the lead shortly after. Hanford, though, was full of dramatics on the night. Amanda Fraga connected for a late equalizer in the 78th and with just two minutes remaining in overtime, Jessica Maher, who scored the Falcons' first goal, provided the winner that denied Richland the top seed.
10/19 Kamiakin 10-0 Southridge
Izzy Conover and Maddie Morgan each registered a hat-trick on the night. Aaliyah Valladares and Britney Donais each tallied a goal and two assists, and River Holle and Sarah Ensign each scored.
10/19 Chiawana 8-0 Kennewick
The Riverhawks left no doubt, grabbing every point they could possibly get. Summer Yates scored five goals on the night. Julianna Ventura also scored, but no further details are available.
