The Citroen C4 hatch will soon go out of production, with no direct replacement set to take its place.
This makes the just-unveiled C4 Cactus facelift its de-facto replacement in Citroen’s range outside of China.
Xavier Peugeot, Citroen’s head of product planning, told Autocar: “The current C4 is a seven-year-old design and we had to make a decision. We will stop production and the C4 Cactus will take its place.”
According to Peugeot, Citroen is working on a successor to the C4 hatch. It will be “something fresh and different”, but will appear in “three to four years time”.
Until then, the brand won’t have a direct competitor to the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Opel/Vauxhall Astra.
The situation set to play out in Europe and other regions is already the reality in Australia, with the C4 hatch dropped after the 2015 model year and replaced, effectively, by the C4 Cactus, launched late in 2015.
A heavily revised version of the three-year old C4 Cactus made its debut this week, and features new body panels, and a more upmarket look.
It has also lost its distinctive ‘air bumps’, which featured most prominently on the doors, but were also present on the front and rear bumpers.
As part of the update, the C4 Cactus is one of the first cars to gain the company’s new Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension.
The revised C4 Cactus will go on sale locally from late 2018.
